Maserati Extends Grecale Folgore’s Range by 80 Kilometres Without Changing the Battery
If any carmaker can prove that clever engineering sometimes beats brute power, it’s Maserati. The Italian luxury brand has managed to stretch the range of its electric SUV, the Grecale Folgore, from 500 to 580 kilometres, and it did so without touching the battery or the motors.
According to Carscoops, the gain comes from Maserati’s new all-wheel-drive system, aptly named AWD Disconnect. The principle is simple but smart. When the car is cruising and doesn’t need four-wheel drive, the system physically disconnects the front half-shafts. With the front wheels no longer tied to the drivetrain, mechanical drag drops, and efficiency rises. Maserati says the switch takes just 500 milliseconds, faster than the driver can press the accelerator.
The result is lower energy consumption and up to 16 percent more range. Electrive confirmed the figures, noting that with the new software and drivetrain setup, the Grecale Folgore can now cover up to 580 kilometres on a single charge under the WLTP cycle.
Everything else remains familiar. AutoExpress reports that the Grecale Folgore still uses two electric motors producing a combined 557 horsepower and 820 newton metres of torque. It sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 220 km/h. The 105 kWh battery stays the same, but thanks to better system optimisation, Maserati now squeezes more performance out of every watt.
There are no major changes to the exterior or cabin, although the model now offers more options for personalisation. After all, engineering finesse should never overshadow a sense of luxury.
Motor1 pointed out that Maserati deliberately avoided inflating battery capacity just to chase longer range. Keeping the pack size steady helps maintain weight balance and preserves the car’s sporty character, a core part of the brand’s DNA. As development chief Carlo Canossa explained, the goal was “to make the car smarter, not bigger.”
This means the Grecale Folgore won’t join Tesla or Lucid in the kilowatt-hour arms race. Instead, it champions efficiency, executed with Italian elegance.
The luxury electric SUV segment is becoming fiercely competitive. Porsche’s Macan EV, BMW’s iX3 and Mercedes’ EQC are all vying for attention, and every extra kilometre of range can sway a buyer’s choice. As Italpassion noted, Maserati’s update puts the Grecale Folgore back on track, even edging ahead of the Macan EV in range.
Maserati has shown that real progress doesn’t always need a bigger battery or an all-new platform. Sometimes, a small but intelligent improvement is enough. With its new AWD Disconnect system, the Grecale Folgore stands out as one of the most efficient and refined luxury electric SUVs in its class. And it quietly reminds the industry that practicality can be just as desirable as speed.
