Lamborghini Hits Pause on EV Plans: Next Urus to Stay Hybrid

It’s safe to say carmakers are navigating treacherous terrain. Decisions made today won’t hit the streets for another three or four years, and no one truly knows what customers will want by then. Not long ago, Lamborghini seemed confident that the next-generation Urus would be fully electric. Now, that vision has shifted. According to CEO Stephan Winkelmann in a recent interview, the second-generation Urus will remain a hybrid for the foreseeable future.

Currently slated for debut in 2029, the upcoming Urus will be powered by a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. Winkelmann says customers are “very pleased” with this direction. Technical details remain under wraps, but development is already underway on a hybrid Urus Performante, making this less of a dramatic reversal and more of a measured step in Lamborghini’s slow march toward electrification.

That doesn’t mean the idea of an all-electric Urus is entirely off the table. With Europe’s planned 2035 ban on combustion engines and tightening emissions regulations, Lamborghini will eventually need to go fully green. A purely electric Urus might still see the light of day in the early 2030s—but only when the market conditions are right.
