Kia promises a bold, futuristic rebirth for the Seltos, though reality looks far less optimistic

Kia is teasing the next generation of the Seltos ahead of its official debut, describing it as a bold design statement packed with future ready technology. In practice it looks more like another cosmetic refresh attempting to hold ground in the overcrowded subcompact SUV segment.

The company has released its first images of the second generation Seltos. Since 2019 the model has delivered strong global sales, yet its real mission has always been simple, to offer an affordable, compact SUV with design that offends no one. Now Kia is trying to sell the idea that the new Seltos is avant garde and inspired by tomorrow.

The brand’s Opposites United design philosophy, which Kia cites at every opportunity, produces familiar proportions here, a high bonnet line, clean surfaces and enough blockiness to pass for a real SUV in the eyes of buyers. The Star Map lighting signature is eye catching, although it cannot hide the fact that the entire front end borrows heavily from Kia’s electric range without the vehicle itself going electric.

The tail lamps, a mix of horizontal and vertical elements, follow the same path. The look is cohesive but hardly boundary pushing. Flush door handles bring aerodynamic and functional gains, yet they now appear in almost every brand’s playbook. Calling them innovative would be generous.

Kia also highlights a broader colour palette and the X Line and GT Line packages, which are meant to help buyers express their personality. Fair enough, although such trim variations have become the bare minimum rather than a surprising bonus.

When it comes to technical details and engines, Kia remains quiet. We can expect a mix of combustion and hybrid options that meet market expectations without exceeding them.

The global online reveal takes place on 10 December. Kia understands that the subcompact SUV class does not require reinvention. Success comes from blending into the brief with enough competence to win over shoppers. On that measure the new Seltos will probably do well, even if the design department would prefer you believed something truly revolutionary has arrived.
