Compass 4xe: Jeep’s Trail-Lite Hybrid for City Streets and Weekend Getaways
Jeep has introduced the refreshed Compass 4xe, a plug-in hybrid pitched as “purpose-built for off-roading.” In reality, it’s the latest in a line of lifestyle-focused iterations, where the most notable upgrades are found in cabin materials and a handful of rugged cosmetic tweaks.
Key changes include a 10 mm suspension lift, improved approach and departure angles (27° and 31°, respectively), and protective cladding around the bumpers. It’s a respectable surface-level overhaul, though there are no updates to the powertrain or drivetrain—meaning the 4xe remains mechanically unchanged beneath its restyled exterior. Despite its “Trail Rated” badge, the question of true off-road capability still lingers.
Inside, the Compass gets a practical makeover: wipe-clean seat fabrics, scratch-resistant surfaces, and rubber floor mats designed to withstand mud and grit. Earthy, sand-toned upholstery replaces the usual metallic accents with red highlights—choices clearly tailored more for curated social media posts than hardcore trail sessions.
Jeep’s head of design touts the vehicle as an ideal family SUV for those who “lead an active lifestyle and love to escape into nature on weekends.” That framing says it all—Compass 4xe wants to look the part of a serious off-roader, but is better suited to urban use with the occasional light trail adventure.
All in all, the Compass 4xe is sensibly equipped, convincingly rugged in appearance, and entirely adequate for the city and gentler excursions beyond the pavement.
