Type 01 links Jaguar’s past with its new direction

Jaguar is using the word Type deliberately, nodding to the brand’s historic sports cars, including the C Type and E Type. The number 0 refers to the zero emission electric powertrain, while 1 marks the first model in Jaguar’s new era.

This is not just a name change. The Type 01 is the key car in Jaguar’s attempt to reposition itself. The company previously confirmed that the Type 00 concept previews a four door electric GT, built on the new Jaguar Electric Architecture platform. According to official information, Jaguar is targeting a WLTP range of up to 770 kilometres and the ability to add up to 321 kilometres of range in 15 minutes.

More than 1000 bhp, but speed is not the only point

The Type 01 will use a three motor electric powertrain, with one motor at the front and two at the rear. Total output will exceed 1000 bhp, while torque will reach 1300 Nm.

Those figures place the Type 01 very high on the technical ladder, but the wider message matters more for Jaguar. The brand is not trying to continue the logic of the old XF, XE or F Type. Instead, it is building a new luxury electric grand tourer aimed at buyers with deeper pockets and a taste for more distinctive design.

First prototypes head to Monaco

Disguised Jaguar Type 01 prototypes will appear in public during the Monaco Formula E weekend, held on 16 and 17 May.

After reshaping its model range, Jaguar needs a strong new beginning. The Type 01 has to convince two audiences at once: long standing Jaguar loyalists and buyers already looking towards Porsche, Bentley or high performance electric GTs. Its success will depend on whether the radical design and high technical level can create a genuine new luxury position, not just a very visible campaign.
