Type R Goes Electric?
At the CES technology show, Honda representatives revealed plans to electrify the iconic Type R series. However, the primary challenge lies in the fundamental differences between electric motors and internal combustion engines, which render traditional development methods for such performance vehicles insufficient. Despite this, Honda aims to create a machine that delivers an exhilarating driving experience.
A truly sporty electric car cannot rely solely on raw power. Elements like sound, vibration, and acceleration—often compromised in electric vehicles—play a crucial role in the overall driving sensation. Developing an electric Type R is therefore a complex and demanding process, and Honda has yet to share concrete details about when such a model might be ready under its brand.
Currently, the Civic Type R sold in Europe remains Honda's only non-hybrid model in the region. The hot hatch, in production since 2022, is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine producing 330 hp and 420 Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed manual gearbox.
