Honda shows hybrid saloon prototype that could point to a new Accord
Honda revealed two next generation hybrid prototypes at a business strategy briefing in Japan: a Honda saloon and an Acura SUV. Officially, the company did not call them the Accord and RDX, but the shape, timing and product logic point rather neatly in that direction.
Honda is not talking about the Accord just yet
Honda referred to the new car simply as the “Honda Hybrid Sedan Prototype”. Several publications, however, link it to the next generation Accord. The Acura SUV prototype, meanwhile, appears to preview a new RDX, which is expected to move to hybrid power in its next generation.
That makes careful wording essential. Honda hinted at a possible new Accord, but it did not confirm the model name. The prototype shows a design and technology direction rather than a finished production car.
Hybrids move into the space once reserved for EVs
Honda says the roll out of its next generation hybrid models will begin in 2027. By the financial year ending in March 2030, the company plans to launch 15 new hybrid models, mainly for North America. The first production cars based on these prototypes should reach showrooms within two years.
The new hybrid system is designed to improve fuel economy in the next generation e:HEV models by more than 10 per cent. At the same time, Honda wants to cut the cost of the hybrid system by more than 30 per cent compared with the technology used in its 2023 models.
The strategy shifted after electric car losses
Honda is turning more sharply towards hybrids after electric car investments and cancelled projects delivered a heavy financial blow. The manufacturer earlier reported its first annual loss since its stock market listing in 1957, while also stressing that electric car development would continue, only with more caution around spending.
In practice, Honda no longer seems in a hurry to turn the whole range electric. Over the next few years, it will lean harder on cars the market currently appears more willing to accept: hybrids that combine a petrol engine with electric drive.
Accord remains too important for Honda to let it fade
Should the prototype really become the basis for a new Accord, it would mark an important course change for the model. The Accord would not become an electric car. Instead, it would keep the traditional saloon format, gain a new hybrid platform and take on a stronger technological role in Honda’s range.
So the story is not only about a slightly odd looking prototype. Honda is showing where its next growth chapter is likely to come from, at least for now. Not from a rush into fully electric cars, but from cheaper, quicker to launch hybrids with rather more patience built in.
