Hennessey Blackbird shuns screens and hybrid power but targets 220 mph

The Hennessey Blackbird takes a deliberate step away from the increasingly powerful, complex and heavy hybrid systems now common in the hypercar class. It combines a naturally aspirated V8, a six-speed manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive and a screen-free cabin, yet still targets as much as 634 kW and a top speed of 220 mph.

Driver engagement takes priority over record chasing

Blackbird is Hennessey’s third hypercar after the Venom GT and Venom F5. Whereas the Venom F5 programme has focused heavily on extreme power and speed, Blackbird is intended to win over its driver through engine sound, immediate throttle response and a mechanical gear change.

Hennessey and Ilmor Engineering are developing a new 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 for the car. The target output is 800–850 hp, equivalent to approximately 597–634 kW, and the engine is expected to rev beyond 9,000 rpm. Power will reach the rear wheels through a six-speed gated manual gearbox.

Hennessey has deliberately rejected turbochargers and electric assistance in pursuit of linear response and a more direct connection between the accelerator and the rear tyres. The company is targeting 0–60 mph in 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 220 mph, or 354 km/h. Both remain development targets rather than independently verified production-car figures.

A carbon structure is intended to keep weight under control

Blackbird will use a bespoke carbon-fibre monocoque and carbon-fibre bodywork. Hennessey is targeting a dry weight of less than 3,000 lb, or 1,360 kg. At 1,360 kg, the projected output would equate to approximately 439–466 kW per tonne. A lower final dry weight would improve those figures.

Hennessey has also confirmed an inboard suspension architecture with adaptive damping, although it has not yet published the detailed geometry. The layout is intended to combine precise handling with long-distance comfort.

Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres will be standard, while traction control and ABS remain part of the package. Blackbird may be deliberately analogue, but it is not dispensing with the electronic systems needed to make its performance manageable.

On headline figures alone, it will not lead the class. The Pagani Utopia Roadster’s 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged V12 produces 635 kW and 1,100 Nm, while the car has a quoted dry weight of 1,280 kg. That gives it a power-to-weight ratio of approximately 496 kW per tonne. Pagani also offers a seven-speed pure manual gearbox, making the Utopia one of Blackbird’s closest conceptual rivals.

The McLaren W1 represents the opposite end of the modern hypercar spectrum. Its V8 hybrid powertrain produces a combined 938 kW and 1,340 Nm. Blackbird cannot compete with that level of output on numbers alone. Its case will instead depend on the response of its naturally aspirated engine, the quality of its gear change and steering, and the appeal of a less complex powertrain.

SR-71 heritage shapes the active aerodynamics

Blackbird’s name and proportions refer to the Lockheed SR-71 reconnaissance aircraft. Its most conspicuous aerodynamic feature is a pair of active vertical stabilisers emerging from the rear bodywork.

They deploy automatically at 71 mph, or 114 km/h, moving to opposing angles of +71 and −71 degrees. Both the activation speed and operating angles reference the SR-71 designation. The driver can also activate the stabilisers manually at any speed.

The Bell X-1 experimental aircraft inspired the diamond-shaped quad exhaust. Formula 1-style sidepods and small winglets influenced by LMP1 racing cars add further motorsport references to the bodywork.

An optional asymmetrically tapered Sky Glass roof takes inspiration from the SR-71’s canopy. Hennessey also uses glass in the rear bulkhead aperture and above the engine bay, increasing the amount of light in the cabin and keeping the V8 visible beneath its glass cover.

The screens disappear, but the smartphone remains

There is no conventional infotainment display, no digital instrument panel and no steering-wheel switchgear. A large analogue rev counter dominates the driver’s view, the engine starts with a physical key and the gear linkage remains exposed. Hennessey argues that this avoids rapidly ageing display technology and keeps the driver’s attention on the act of driving.

Blackbird does not abandon connectivity altogether. Hennessey says navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will run through the driver’s own device, held in a bespoke dashboard-mounted holster. Premium audio is integrated discreetly into the cabin.

That arrangement is unusual, and Hennessey has not yet explained in detail how CarPlay and Android Auto will be implemented without a built-in infotainment display. The stated aim is to retain connected functions without allowing a conventional screen to dominate the dashboard.

Hennessey is designing Blackbird as a grand-touring hypercar capable of comfortably covering more than 800 miles, or roughly 1,280 km, in a day. That is a usability claim, not a quoted single-tank range. Gullwing doors, a cabin roomier than the Venom F5’s, ambitious noise and refinement targets and four cupholders underline that the car is not intended solely for circuit use or static display.

The front luggage compartment is designed to accommodate two full-size carry-on bags. Additional storage is located in the rear quarters and cabin. In a class where finding space for even a small bag can be difficult, that degree of practicality gives Blackbird a distinctive proposition.

European buyers still have questions to be answered

Production will be limited to 71 cars, and Hennessey says more than two-thirds of the run has already been allocated. Customer production is targeted for 2029–2030, with deliveries to follow. Venom F5 production is expected to end around 2028.

Blackbird is due to make its public debut at The Quail in California on 14 August 2026. Prices start at $2.5 million before taxes. The eventual cost to a European buyer will depend on exchange rates, local taxes, options, transport and registration charges.

Hennessey says the Blackbird will be homologated for key global markets, but it has not specified the scope of any European Union approval, the countries in which it intends to sell the car or local pricing.

For a European collector, Blackbird’s appeal is unlikely to rest on absolute speed alone. Its real distinction lies in a rare combination: a high-revving naturally aspirated engine, a manual gearbox and an analogue cockpit, paired with a modern carbon structure, adaptive suspension and genuine long-distance ambitions.
