Ford Kuga brings hands free driving to the masses

Ford is rolling out its long awaited BlueCruise system on the updated Ford Kuga, allowing drivers to lift their hands from the wheel on the motorway. With that move, this family SUV becomes one of the smartest cars in its class, and without straying into premium price territory.

BlueCruise operates on a hands free but eyes on the road principle. The system already received official approval in 16 European countries. It controls steering, acceleration and braking, maintains a safe following distance and copes with heavy traffic without drama.

Ford says designated BlueZone sections now cover 95 per cent of European motorways. In that context, adding BlueCruise to the Kuga feels less like a marketing flourish and more like natural evolution. For buyers who value comfort but refuse to pay luxury brand premiums, the timing looks deliberate.

More than just software

Ford’s ambitions do not stop at semi autonomous driving. The refreshed Kuga cabin gained several upgrades aimed at keeping occupants entertained when the journey turns monotonous.

Audiophiles can opt for a B and O Premium sound system delivering 700 watts, enough to cut through motorway noise with ease. The latest Ford SYNC 4 infotainment system integrates streaming services and gaming functions, effectively turning the car into a mobile living room during charging stops or long breaks.

The message is clear. If the act of driving becomes less demanding, the in car experience must compensate.

A subscription rather than a surcharge

Ford takes a pragmatic approach to pricing. Instead of bundling BlueCruise into an expensive options package, the brand offers it on a subscription basis. Customers can pay for continuous access or activate the feature only for a summer road trip or a series of business journeys.

A three month trial period serves as a confident introduction. Ford clearly believes that once drivers experience hands free motorway travel, scepticism will give way to routine.

The Kuga range continues to include plug in hybrids, full hybrids and conventional petrol engines. Yet Ford does not want the Kuga to be merely sensible transport. With BlueCruise, it positions the SUV as a bridge between everyday affordability and the semi autonomous future.

The updated model reaches European roads from April. For many families, that may mark the first time letting go of the wheel feels entirely within reach.
