Ford delivered a statement of intent at the Nürburgring, at a time when the electric and hybrid era keeps rewriting the record books. The Ford GT Mk IV lapped the Nordschleife in 6 minutes 15.977 seconds, climbed to third place on the outright times list and claimed the title of the fastest purely internal combustion car ever to circle the circuit.
Ford set the time on 1 April 2026 and handed the job to Ford Racing works driver Frédéric Vervisch, a man who knows the Nürburgring well enough as a winner of the 24 hour race. On the 20.832 kilometre Nordschleife, he recorded a lap beaten in official comparisons only by the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo and the Volkswagen ID.R. That places the GT Mk IV squarely among the circuit’s elite.
The category matters as much as the lap time
The stopwatch, though, tells only part of the story. The GT Mk IV is a track focused machine without road homologation, so it sits in the logic of a prototype or special track car rather than among series production road cars. Ford therefore does not take the outright Nürburgring production car record. That still belongs to the Mercedes AMG One, which set an official 6 minutes 29.090 seconds on 23 September 2024 and remains the fastest production car ever to lap the circuit.
Still, if the very top of the absolute table is occupied by a hybrid Porsche and an electric Volkswagen, the GT Mk IV gives Ford something symbolically valuable of its own, the title of the fastest petrol powered car ever to lap the Nürburgring. It is exactly the sort of message that carries weight at a moment when many manufacturers have already tied ultimate performance to electrification. Ford turned that tension to its advantage and reminded everyone that the internal combustion engine can still deliver raw, uncompromising pace.
Built with one purpose
The car itself was engineered with that objective in mind. The GT Mk IV uses a larger capacity EcoBoost V6 with twin turbocharging and more than 800 horsepower, along with a longer wheelbase, race tuned gearing and suspension, and an extended long tail aerodynamic package designed to boost stability and downforce on track. Ford planned just 67 examples, which turns the achievement into both an engineering feat and a final flourish for the GT programme.
Ford is not selling the GT Mk IV as a volume model, nor is it relying on it to rescue a quarterly earnings report. The company is using it as a halo project, a way to reinforce its performance identity and preserve the technical aura that can later be passed on to other models. In that sense, the Nürburgring result works as a form of marketing capital whose value stretches well beyond the revenue from 67 cars.
More than one trophy
There is another layer to the story. With the Mk IV, Ford also claimed the title of the fastest American car ever around the Nürburgring. That shows the brand is chasing several narratives at once, one aimed at absolute track credibility, the other at securing prestige within the wider performance car world. It also explains why Ford continues to keep other circuit focused projects in view.
In the end, the GT Mk IV’s 6 minutes 15.977 seconds marks one of those rare moments when engineering, heritage and communication land perfectly on the same point. The production car crown stayed with the AMG One, but Ford left the Nürburgring with a different prize, and an emotionally potent one at that: the fastest petrol powered car, and the fastest American car, ever to lap the Green Hell.
