Chevrolet Corvette Melts After Record-Breaking Speed Run

A Chevrolet Corvette C7 ZR1 met a fiery fate at the Big Bend Open Road Race in the United States, quite literally melting after a record-setting high-speed run. Following the 189-kilometre event, in which the car averaged over 279 km/h, the rear of the supercar was found partially melted from extreme heat, according to the organisers’ social media posts.

Driver and owner John Anhalt set a new course record, clocking a top speed of 354 km/h. But when he crossed the finish line, it became clear that the rear fascia between the taillights had warped and melted, with the lights themselves also damaged by the heat.

Anhalt’s Corvette had been heavily modified, including the installation of a non-standard exhaust system. That alteration likely caused the exhaust gases to run far hotter than those of the factory version, ultimately leading to the car’s self-inflicted meltdown.

The Corvette C7 ZR1 remains the most powerful model in the lineage, powered by a 6.2-litre supercharged V8 producing 765 horsepower and capable of exceeding 340 km/h. On this occasion, though, it proved that even raw speed can have a melting point.
