CATL Shenxing III brings EV charging into the six-minute era
CATL unveiled the third-generation Shenxing battery in Beijing, claiming 10 to 80 percent charging in 3 minutes 44 seconds and 10 to 98 percent in 6 minutes 27 seconds. The event marks a new stage in EV competition: alongside range, charging speed, thermal management and infrastructure will increasingly shape buying decisions.
This time, CATL did not simply present another laboratory number. The company says Shenxing III retains more than 90 percent of its capacity even after 1,000 full cycles, and can charge from 20 percent to 98 percent in about nine minutes even at minus 30 degrees. That means its engineers are tackling two EV pain points at once: winter charging and the effect of fast charging on service life.
Even more important is the technical logic CATL has chosen. By the company’s own account, LFP chemistry is approaching the theoretical limit of its energy density, which means the priority on this platform is to extract extreme charging speed rather than keep chasing additional range. Shenxing III shows that CATL wants to turn the LFP battery from a cheap and durable solution into one that also delivers a powerful, premium-class user experience. That is a strategic step, because LFP’s strengths lie in price, fire safety and raw material bases, but its weaker side until now has been prestigious performance.
The competitive dimension makes the news more significant still. BYD announced its 1,000 kW “super e-platform” in March last year, saying it would add 400 km of range with a five-minute charge. CATL responded at the time with the second-generation Shenxing, promising 520 km in five minutes. Now CATL is raising the bar again, although the comparison remains partly marketing-driven because manufacturers use different charging windows and different metrics. Even so, the substantive conclusion is clear: Chinese battery makers have pushed the race down to the level of seconds, and Western manufacturers must respond not with the next model cycle, but with the next infrastructure investment.
CATL also has the position to do so. According to Reuters, the company’s share of global traction battery usage rose to 42.1 percent based on the first two months of this year, and at the same technology day the group linked battery development directly to infrastructure: CATL plans to build 4,000 integrated charging and battery swap stations in nearly 190 cities by the end of this year. That is the most important detail in the whole story. CATL is no longer selling just a battery, but an entire energy supply system, to bring charging time as close as possible to the experience of a conventional filling station.
For now, however, it remains unclear which production cars will get Shenxing III first. That suggests CATL deliberately focused on demonstrating the platform and ecosystem, to avoid the news being reduced to a single brand or a single model. One conclusion follows from that: the next big winner will not necessarily be the manufacturer that shows the fastest battery, but the one that can combine the battery, cooling, high-voltage architecture and a genuinely functional megawatt charging network into one credible package.
