Buick’s New Flagship Stuns: Hybrid Electra L7 Promises Over 1,400 km on a Single Charge and Tank

Buick has put a figure on the table that should make even the most sceptical buyer raise an eyebrow. Its new hybrid flagship, the Electra L7, claims a range of more than 1,400 kilometres, wrapped in comfort features usually reserved for luxury limousines rather than family sedans.

Buick’s Chinese arm has finally revealed full details of the model long whispered about as the brand’s green showcase. The Electra L7 will reach showrooms in China within weeks, and contrary to earlier speculation, it will not debut as a pure EV but as an ambitious hybrid.

Development delays stemmed from GM engineers choosing to prioritise this hybrid setup. A fully electric version is not off the table, but for now the spotlight is on a drivetrain that pairs a 343-horsepower electric motor with a 1.5-litre petrol unit producing 156 hp and 230 Nm of torque. Together, they deliver 0–100 km/h in 5.9 seconds—a very respectable figure for a sedan of this size.

Power comes from a 40.2 kWh battery pack based on GM’s Ultium platform, offering up to 302 kilometres on electric power alone. In hybrid mode, the system stretches total range to over 1,400 km.

The Electra L7 is no compact either. Measuring 5,032 mm long, 1,952 mm wide and 1,500 mm tall, with a three-metre wheelbase, it sits firmly in executive territory—larger, in fact, than a Toyota Camry.

Inside, the cabin is a showcase of tech and indulgence. A pair of displays measure 10.25 and 15.6 inches, but the real spectacle is a 50-inch head-up projection across the windscreen. Up to 27 speakers handle the audio landscape, while passengers settle into “zero-gravity” seats adjustable via buttons, touchscreens, or voice commands. Underpinning it all is a high-performance onboard processor and an advanced driver-assist suite powered by lidar sensors and Momenta software.
