BMW hints at new M3, but V8 engine remains speculation
BMW M boss Franciscus van Meel published a social media teaser linking the lighting design of the M Hybrid V8 race car with a future road model. Several outlets read it as a possible hint at the next BMW M3, although BMW has not confirmed a V8 engine.
Yellow lights could reach road cars
The teaser shows the BMW M Hybrid V8 Le Mans prototype alongside a future production model hidden in shadow. Van Meel’s point is fairly clear: yellow lighting elements belong to BMW M’s racing DNA, and the brand wants to bring that visual signature to the road.
BMW M’s official material for the 2026 update of the M Hybrid V8 also highlights the yellow headlight accents. According to the company, they reference BMW M Motorsport race cars as well as BMW M’s performance road models.
The V8 link is an assumption, not a fact
The teaser may point towards the new M3, and some have even taken it as a hint at the return of a V8 engine. The argument comes from the name and technical layout of the M Hybrid V8 itself. The racing prototype uses a 4.0 litre turbocharged eight cylinder engine with electric assistance. In regulation limited form, BMW M lists output at around 640 hp and 650 Nm.
Still, the V8 theory needs careful handling. BMW did not use this teaser to confirm the engine line up for the next M3. BMWBlog wrote in late 2025 that the head of the M division had confirmed to them that the next petrol M3 would continue with a straight six engine.
The stronger clue is probably design
For now, the safer conclusion concerns the lighting, not the engine. The next M3 is expected to adopt the visual language of the Neue Klasse era, and yellow light graphics could become a more important identifier for future M models.
According to official information, BMW M will begin launching a new generation of fully electric M cars from 2027, using four electric motors and Neue Klasse technology. BMWBlog reports that a combustion engined M3 will remain alongside it, most likely with 48 volt mild hybrid assistance rather than a V8 hybrid system.
So the teaser matters, but it is not proof. Based on current information, it points chiefly to the next M3’s lighting design and its connection with BMW M Motorsport. The V8 comeback, for now, looks more like journalistic interpretation than a confirmed return.
