BMW G74 development reportedly stalled, casting doubt on the planned G-Class rival

BMW’s rumoured G74 was intended to take the brand directly into Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Range Rover territory for the first time. According to sources familiar with the programme, however, the luxury off-roader failed to clear its final approval round and has effectively stalled. BMW has never publicly confirmed that the G74 project exists, so this is best described as an unapproved development programme placed on hold — not a cancelled production model.

The G74 reportedly failed to secure final approval

The project, known internally as G74, had reportedly been targeted for launch in 2029. The latest information suggests that it did not receive final approval, making series production considerably less likely than it once appeared.

The G74 would have filled a conspicuous gap in BMW’s range. The X5, X7 and XM offer powerful drivetrains, strong road performance and luxurious cabins, but none directly challenges the G-Class with a boxy body, serious off-road hardware and a reputation built over decades.

Reports suggest that BMW wanted genuine off-road ability to be central to the vehicle’s brief. In other words, the G74 was intended to be more than an X5 fitted with extra underbody protection, taller suspension and a few additional drive modes.

From a Neue Klasse EV concept to an X5-based platform

The project reportedly began after a competitor benchmarking exercise in which the electric Rivian R1T made a strong impression on BMW engineers and executives. The first proposal was said to be a fully electric model based on the Neue Klasse NA5 architecture used by the BMW iX3. According to one report, BMW built a full-size design model, although it remains unclear whether the idea ever progressed to a running prototype.

As the growth in electric-vehicle demand slowed, BMW is said to have shelved the NA5-based proposal and moved the programme to the flexible architecture associated with the new fifth-generation G65 X5. That would have opened the door to several powertrains, including plug-in hybrid and fully electric versions, while moving the proposed production location to BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina.

The reported specification described a large three-row SUV with a wide panoramic roof, a rear-mounted spare wheel and more substantial off-road hardware than a conventional X5. Plans were also said to include seating integrated into the tailgate area, aimed at buyers with an active, outdoor-oriented lifestyle.

An X5-derived platform would point towards monocoque construction, but no reliable source has disclosed firm details about body reinforcement, suspension travel, the all-wheel-drive system or differential locks. Those elements therefore remain speculation rather than confirmed engineering features.

A boxy body would not have been enough to challenge the G-Class

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class sets an unusually high technical benchmark in this segment. It uses a ladder-frame chassis, selectable low-range gearing and three locking differentials. The Mercedes-AMG G 63 adds a 4.0-litre V8 biturbo producing 430 kW and 850 Nm, enough to accelerate the large off-roader from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds. Its WLTP fuel consumption is rated at 14.7–15.7 l/100 km, with CO₂ emissions of 335–358 g/km.

An X5-derived monocoque platform could have favoured on-road refinement, packaging and handling, although the result would have depended on the final engineering specification. To be taken seriously away from asphalt, the G74 would still have needed generous wheel travel, effective underbody protection, meaningful wading depth and a robust traction system capable of dealing with cross-axle situations.

A more upright body alone would not have allowed BMW to match the G-Class for either off-road capability or heritage. The G74’s real opportunity lay in a different formula: combining the X5’s road manners and Neue Klasse-derived electronics with more serious off-road engineering than any current BMW SUV.

Plug-in hybrid and fully electric versions could also have given the model a clear point of difference, particularly in Europe. The G 63’s fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions underline how difficult it would be to introduce another large luxury off-roader powered solely by a substantial combustion engine.

Nothing has been officially cancelled

The most important distinction is that BMW has not cancelled a vehicle it had formally announced. The company has never publicly confirmed the G74, its proposed launch date, its powertrains or even the existence of the programme.

The available information instead points to an internal project that reportedly failed to secure final approval. BMW could still revisit the idea if market conditions change, but the chances of seeing the G74 reach production in its previously described form now appear significantly slimmer.
