BMW Alpina XB7 Manufaktur marks the end of an era
The luxurious Alpina XB7 leaves the stage with a dignified farewell. BMW unveiled a special final edition called the BMW Alpina XB7 Manufaktur, marking the closing chapter of a model that became one of the most distinctive luxury SUVs on the market.
The limited edition celebrates one of the most important collaborations between BMW and Alpina while offering collectors a final opportunity to secure one of the most powerful and opulent full size SUVs available.
BMW will continue to use the Alpina name in the future. Even so, this special edition closes a clearly defined chapter in the company’s history. The Manufaktur model focuses less on outright power and more on craftsmanship, exclusivity and design, the qualities that traditionally set Alpina apart from standard BMW luxury.
Built through the BMW Manufaktur programme
The special edition was created through BMW’s bespoke personalisation programme known as BMW Manufaktur.
This programme allows buyers to choose from a wide selection of exclusive colours, materials and finishes not available on regular models.
Visually the Manufaktur version stands out through several distinctive details. These include Alpina specific wheels, a hand finished interior, unique exterior paint options and individually selected leather and trim materials. The result feels closer to a small series luxury vehicle than to a typical production SUV.
Power remains unmistakably Alpina
Under the bonnet sits the same engine that helped establish the XB7 as one of the fastest luxury SUVs in its class.
The Alpina XB7 uses a 4.4 litre twin turbocharged V8 producing around 621 horsepower. Despite weighing well over two and a half tonnes, the SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in roughly 4.2 seconds.
While many rivals emphasise aggressive sporting character, Alpina traditionally focuses on effortless high speed comfort and long distance stability.
A partnership that stretches back decades
The Alpina brand spent decades operating as a specialist manufacturer closely associated with BMW models. The company developed its own versions that blended luxury, strong performance and very limited production numbers.
In 2022 BMW acquired the rights to the Alpina brand name. Since then the company has gradually begun reshaping the role of Alpina within its wider model line up.
The Alpina XB7, based on the BMW X7, stands among the final vehicles developed according to Alpina’s traditional philosophy.
A collector’s SUV
Production numbers for the Manufaktur edition will remain extremely limited. That exclusivity alone makes the model particularly attractive to collectors.
In this segment performance and technology are only part of the story. Rarity, craftsmanship and brand heritage carry equal weight, and the Alpina XB7 Manufaktur offers all three.
For decades Alpina operated as a semi independent manufacturer that transformed BMW models into highly specialised variants. The brand now appears to be moving towards a role closer to a luxury sub brand, somewhat similar to the strategy behind Mercedes Maybach.
If that transition succeeds, Alpina may come to represent less radical tuning and more handcrafted luxury. For some enthusiasts that shift may feel a little bittersweet, though the luxury car market often moves in exactly that direction.
