BMW’s 4 Series Coupe and Convertible to Stay in Production Until the End of the Decade

In an era when most cars change generations faster than their owners can fill a service book, BMW is taking a different path with its classic two-door models. The current 4 Series lineup will outlive its expected life cycle and remain on the line far longer than planned.

According to reports, both the 4 Series Coupe and Convertible will continue in production until June 2029, while the five-door Gran Coupe will bow out a year earlier, in the summer of 2028. The decision affects not only the standard 4 Series range but also the high-performance M4 variants.

Both received a facelift in 2024, and just months ago, another technical upgrade followed: the turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six gained an extra 18 horsepower and 40 newton meters of torque. BMW has also scheduled another update for March 2026, when its diesel engines will be recalibrated to comply with the stringent Euro 7 emissions standards.

For comparison, production of the related 3 Series sedan and touring models — which share the same platform — will end much sooner, between October 2026 and February 2027.

BMW has not yet issued an official statement about the next-generation 4 Series, but early hints suggest that the future M4 could be exclusively electric. If that proves true, it will mark a symbolic handover — the moment when the classic roar of combustion gives way to the silent surge of electric power.

For now, the BMW 4 Series remains a rare bridge between two worlds: a two-door time machine preserving the spirit of the traditional sports coupe, holding the line just a little longer before the future fully takes over.
