Airbus A350-1000ULR flew for more than 24 hours, but fell well short of aviation’s absolute record

The Airbus A350-1000ULR covered 23,076 km from Melbourne to Toulouse in 24 hours and 24 minutes. That is farther than the benchmark Guinness World Records currently lists for the longest flight by an unmodified commercial aircraft, but nowhere near aviation’s absolute distance record. Nor was this a passenger service: the aircraft carried a test crew, flight-test instrumentation and enough fuel to remain aloft for almost a full day.

Airbus deliberately took the long way round

Flight-test aircraft MSN707 departed Melbourne on July 27 and landed in Toulouse on the morning of July 28. According to Airbus, it covered 12,460 nautical miles, or 23,076 km, and remained airborne for 24 hours and 24 minutes.

Rather than heading west across the Indian Ocean, the aircraft crossed the Pacific towards Los Angeles, continued across the United States and Canada, crossed the Atlantic south of Greenland and then flew over the UK before reaching southern France. Engineers deliberately extended the mission to assess the aircraft in conditions beyond the expected duration of future scheduled services.

The test was intended to demonstrate that the aircraft could support a 23-hour block-time mission. Block time runs from the release of the parking brake at the departure airport to its application at the arrival stand. Qantas’s longest planned sectors are expected to involve up to 21 hours and 40 minutes in the air, with the remaining margin covering taxiing, holding and a possible diversion to an alternate airport.

This was neither a passenger flight nor a certification test

Airbus classifies the Melbourne–Toulouse mission as a development flight test, rather than a certification flight. The aircraft did not carry its planned commercial load of 238 passengers, their baggage or a normal cabin service. Instead, it carried five pilots, two test-flight engineers monitoring aircraft systems from the cockpit and three flight-test engineers working at instrumentation stations in the cabin. Three of the pilots were from Airbus and two from Qantas.

The pilots worked four-hour shifts, with one crew member rotating every two hours to provide a two-hour overlap for a thorough handover. Because the two new flight-crew rest compartments were occupied by ventilation-monitoring equipment, the crew slept in the eight-berth cabin-crew rest compartment at the rear of the aircraft.

The 23,076 km figure therefore cannot be treated as the A350-1000ULR’s range with a full commercial payload. Its light load, instrumented test cabin and carefully planned route and weather conditions were far more favourable than those of a scheduled airline service.

The Airbus flew 1,474 km farther than the Guinness-listed Boeing benchmark

The commercial-aircraft distance record currently published by Guinness World Records belongs to the Boeing 777-200LR. In 2005, Boeing flew the aircraft eastwards from Hong Kong to London, covering 21,601.7 km in 22 hours and 42 minutes. The A350-1000ULR has now flown roughly 1,474 km farther and remained airborne for an additional hour and 42 minutes.

The comparison is not entirely like for like. Guinness describes the Boeing as an unmodified production commercial aircraft. The A350-1000ULR is a purpose-built ultra-long-range derivative with an additional fuel tank, a higher maximum take-off weight and other Project Sunrise-specific changes. MSN707 was also flying in a heavily instrumented test configuration. There is no public confirmation that any record-keeping body has formally ratified the Airbus flight.

Nor is there any basis for claiming that no aircraft has previously flown more than 23,000 km without landing or refuelling. The Rutan Voyager completed the first non-stop, unrefuelled circumnavigation of the world in 1986, remaining airborne for nine days. Aviation’s current FAI absolute distance record is higher still: Steve Fossett covered 41,467.53 km in the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer in 2006.

The extra tank reshapes the A350’s fuel system

The A350-1000ULR is powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines. Airbus has integrated a 20,900-litre rear centre tank into the airframe, extending the range of the standard A350-1000 by around 1,000 nautical miles, or 1,852 km. The modification required revised fuel-system management, additional pumps, pressure monitoring and automated fuel transfer between the tanks.

One of the long flight’s main objectives was to validate the additional tank, along with cabin ventilation and temperature control. Airbus also tested its new galley air-cooling system, which saves around 300 kg compared with the previous arrangement. Every kilogram removed helps reduce fuel burn, particularly on a mission where the aircraft must take off carrying fuel for the next 22 hours.

Extreme range inevitably limits payload. Qantas will fit its A350-1000ULRs with just 238 seats, while Airbus quotes 375 to 400 passengers for a standard A350-1000 in a typical three-class layout. The Qantas cabin will feature six First suites, 52 Business suites, 40 Premium Economy seats and 140 Economy seats, 42 of which will be branded Economy Plus. Most Economy seats will offer a pitch of 33 inches, or 838 mm, while Economy Plus increases that to 34 inches.

Boeing offers more seats; Airbus delivers more mission-specific range

The A350-1000ULR’s closest future rival is the Boeing 777-8. Boeing currently quotes a range of up to 9,500 nautical miles, or 17,590 km, and capacity for 350 to 425 passengers in a two-class cabin. Airbus describes the A350-1000ULR as capable of missions approaching 10,000 nautical miles, or roughly 18,500 km, but Qantas has limited its aircraft to 238 seats. The manufacturers’ figures are not directly comparable because they are calculated under different assumptions, yet the strategic distinction is clear.

Boeing’s design places greater emphasis on passenger capacity, while Airbus and Qantas are trading volume for extreme range and a premium-heavy cabin. Project Sunrise does not require a universal long-haul workhorse. It needs a highly specialised aircraft capable of connecting Australia’s east coast with Europe in a single hop.

That makes the A350-1000ULR significant in the wider long-haul market. It may never become a high-volume variant, but it demonstrates how far an existing twin-engined passenger-aircraft platform can be stretched without resorting to four engines or an intermediate fuel stop.

The real passenger test begins in 2027

Qantas plans to launch non-stop Sydney–London services in October 2027. The airline says the direct flight will save up to four hours compared with the fastest one-stop connections, with tickets due to go on sale in February 2027. Sydney–New York has been confirmed as the next Project Sunrise route, although its launch date has not yet been announced.

The first aircraft delivered to Qantas will be named Vega and is due to arrive in April 2027. The airline has ordered 12 A350-1000ULRs in total. MSN707, the aircraft used for the development flight, is not Vega and is not scheduled to be delivered first.

The technology can now keep an airliner aloft for more than a day. The harder question is how a passenger will feel after spending 22 hours in Economy. Qantas’s answer includes a dedicated Wellbeing Zone, science-led lighting, carefully timed meals and a far less densely packed cabin than usual. None of those features will make a 22-hour flight short, but they may make it bearable.

Airbus has shown that the A350-1000ULR can complete an exceptionally long development flight. It has not shown that the aircraft can carry 238 passengers for 23,000 km, nor has it set aviation’s absolute distance record. The real achievement is more measured and technically more important: a twin-engined passenger aircraft has completed a development mission lasting more than 24 hours, bringing Project Sunrise’s scheduled services a major step closer.
